Sona Jasani, MD is Honored by the American Health Council for “Best in Medicine”

NEW YORK, Feb. 14, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The American Health Council is honored to name Sona Jasani, MD as one of “America’s Best Doctors” for her unparalleled professional dedication and extraordinary contributions to the medical field. As the director of One Health Initiative at Rutgers University’s Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey for nearly two years, Dr. Jasani guides a transdisciplinary, collaborative group of physicians, veterinarians, ecological sciences, and public health experts through exceptional leadership. She maintains an active schedule as she also lends her expertise in Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pelvic/Abnormal Bleeding, and Minimally-Invasive Procedures to Rutgers’s Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences. With nearly six years of experience in the healthcare industry, Dr. Jasani contributes extensive knowledge to women’s health through practice and research.

Dr. Jasani’s professional aspirations stem from her childhood. When she learned that her mother struggled with infertility, she dove deeper into her family history and realized that several members of her extended family also suffered from menstrual dysfunction. As a result, Dr. Jasani pursued obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences to help others who suffer from similar issues. She matriculated at Rutgers University and earned her bachelor’s in biological sciences and art history in 2008, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. She pursued her medical degree with distinction in medical education from Rutgers’ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2012, and later completed an OBGYN residency program at Rush University Medical Center in 2016.

Remaining faithful to the institution that provided her with considerable educational tools, Dr. Jasani serves as a clinical instructor and academic faculty scholar at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She practices general obstetrics and gynecology in both ambulatory and in-patient settings. She educates undergraduate and medical students in addition to residents through lectures and presentations, and conducts medical and educational reproductive studies, in addition to serving as a research mentor to various students. As a principal investigator at the university, Dr. Jasani examines the effect of HIV on menopause, menopausal health risks and effects of hormone status on immunologic parameters in HIV patients. She continues her passion for research as she also serves as a research assistant to Dr. Chi Wei Lu in the university’s Child Health Institute of New Jersey research-based center, where she analyzes placental contributions toward the development of the autism spectrum disorder.

Dr. Jasani has contributed to numerous publications and presentations, including “Utilizing Visual Art to Enhance the Clinical Observation Skills of Medical Students” (Med Teach, July 2013; 35(7):1327-21), “Impact of a structured yoga program on anxiety in infertility patients: a feasibility study” (JIVF Reprod Med Genet 4:183,2016), “One Health: Looking into the Past to Advance Women’s Health for the Future,” presented as part of the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s Public Health Seminar Series last June, and “Sexual Assault and Care for Survivors” at Rush University Medical Center. She produced over 10 abstracts in conjunction with doctors and experts on myriad topics, and presented findings at the Rutgers Global Health Symposium. Her outstanding research skills earned her first place at the Rush University Medical Center Department of OBGYN’s Resident Research Day in 2016 and the award for Innovation in Clinical Medical Student Education at the Annual Retreat of the Northeast Group on Education Affairs in 2012.  She was named the Resident Reporter at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s Annual Meeting in 2015, and earned the Distinction in Medical Education Award at Rutgers in 2012.

As a successful educator and physician, Dr. Jasani attributes her achievements to combining important lessons from the sciences and arts, which allowed her to approach complex problems in a multi-dimensional fashion. Additionally, her empathy for her patients’ situations constantly inspires her to continue to innovate and provide the highest level of care. She continues to evolve by associating herself with several organizations, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and One Health Academy, a Washington, D.C.-based organization that hosts monthly gatherings for health professionals to interact through dialogue, learning and social engagement.

Although Dr. Jasani keeps a working schedule, she enjoys spending time with her family and exploring all aspects of the arts during her free time. She plans to continue developing all aspects of her professional repertoire, including clinical care, research and education. She plans to evolve her work in One Health Initiative by building transdisciplinary partnerships to continue innovating within medicine, science, and health.
