Lebanese officials over the weekend condemned the attack on Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Saturday during a parade that killed 25 people.

President Michel Aoun Sunday sent a cable to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani offering his condolences for the attack in the city of Ahvaz, which targeted a stand with officials that had gathered to watch an event marking the start of the Islamic Republic's 1980-88 war with Iraq.

Aoun, according to a statement from the presidency’s office, denounced the incident, which killed 12 Revolutionary Guard members and wounded more than 60 people.

“This crime proves that terrorism is an epidemic that hits us at the core ... and that we have suffered from a lot in Lebanon and paid an expensive price,” he said.

An Iranian ethnic Arab opposition movement called the Ahvaz National Resistance, which seeks a separate state in the oil-rich Khuzestan province, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Daesh (ISIS) militants also claimed responsibility, but neither group provided evidence of their involvement.

Speaker Nabih Berri also sent a cable to Rouhani, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani offering his condolences for those who were killed. "[Berri] stressed on cooperation in order to dry out the sources and resources of terrorism that is transnational," a statement from his office said.

The Lebanese Foreign Ministry Saturday evening issued a statement denouncing the attack, expressing its solidarity with the Iranian government and people.
