NEW DELHI – A drone strike hit the Kyiv warehouse of Indian pharmaceutical giant Kusum, Ukraine said on April 12, alleging that Russia deliberately targeted Indian-owned businesses. The attack destroyed stocks of essential medicines, including supplies meant for children and the elderly, Ukrainian officials said.

Kusum, one of Ukraine’s largest pharmaceutical companies, is owned by Indian businessman Rajiv Gupta. The company operates under Kusum Healthcare Pvt. Ltd., a New Delhi-based firm founded in 1997. Focused on exports, Kusum began domestic manufacturing in 2007 with a formulation plant in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan, and expanded further with a facility in Indore, in 2018.

The attack comes just weeks after Ukraine and Russia agreed in March 2025 to halt strikes on each other’s energy infrastructure. However, both sides have since accused the other of violating the truce.

India, which has consistently called for a peaceful resolution and cessation of violence in the region, has maintained a neutral stance in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. However, its diplomatic balancing act has drawn scrutiny, particularly as India has ramped up imports of discounted Russian oil following the 2022 invasion — a move driven by Western sanctions on Moscow and reduced Europea
