CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WTAP) - West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey announced Wednesday during a news conference that he intends to ask the United States Supreme Court to overturn a recent Appeals Court decision against the Save Women’s Sports Act.

The appeals court ruled that a transgender teenage girl was allowed to compete in women’s sports.

The 2021 law prohibits males from playing in women’s sports, defining “male” as “an individual whose biological sex determined at birth is male.”

Morrisey said transgender women and girls have a biological advantage that makes it unfair for them to compete in women’s sports. “We are vigorously defending the law, and that law is reasonable,” Morrisey said. “It’s based on biology and it’s based on fairness. We are working to defend the integrity of women’s sports.”

During the news conference Wednesday, Morrisey was joined by Riley Gaines, an activist and former collegiate athlete, who spoke in support of the Save Women’s Sports Act.
